Peter Apo
Peter Apo is a Lahaina-born Native Hawaiian who grew up in Mākaha, O‘ahu, graduated high school from the Mid-Pacific Institute, and attended the University of Oregon class of 1961.
He is President of the Peter Apo Company, a consulting service for businesses doing business in Hawaii for the first time. He is a credentialed Native Hawaiian leader with a prolific history of service to the people of Hawai’i and the Native Hawaiian community. He has been blessed with leadership roles spanning both the public and private sectors in a 40-year history of service with state and city government, the corporate business sector, and community-based initiatives.
Peter’s public and community service includes serving on the first Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in 1980 followed by 12 years of service as a state legislator in the Hawai‘i State House of Representatives which he ended as Vice-Speaker of the House. In 1994 he joined Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris as Director of Culture & Arts for the City and County of Honolulu. In 1996, he assumed the position of Special Assistant on Hawaiian Affairs to Governor Ben Cayetano. He subsequently rejoined Mayor Harris as Director of Waikīkī Development. Peter returned to elective office in 2010 for a second-round as an Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee for two terms ending in 2018.
His volunteer community service included chairing the board of directors for the Historic Hawai'i Foundation, the Pacific Islanders in Communications, the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association where he was also a founding member. He further served on the board of the Hawai'i Visitors & Convention Bureau and was honored with a national appointment by the Secretary of the Army to serve as the Secretary’s Civilian Aide representing the State of Hawai‘i.
Peter is also an opinion columnist and author of op-ed articles and manuscripts on Hawaii politics as well as a public speaker on a range of topics relating to Hawaiian culture, Hawai’i political systems, and sustainable growth issues.
He continues serving the community on numerous boards and commissions. He is also an accomplished performing musician, singer-songwriter, recording artist, and a winner of the prestigious Nā Hōkū Hanohano Hawai’i music award.
